7 books for 7 types of days
(I didn't mean for this list to be 100% women but I won't apologize for it)
Are these days really so different? I dunno -- I suppose they’re as different as days can be one year into a global pandemic in which we’re all doing the same thing we’ve done over and over again…
For the day in which you miss New York City so much your heart hurts, or are thinking about your sisters, or are dealing with an illness, or for when you want to get lost in the head of a young woman with bulimia in a way that’s handled tenderly, or for a too-real representation of what it means to be in your late 20s and lost:
For the day you’re so fucking furious at our government & elected officials you want to give up all hope and just scream into the void, and need a reminder that hope is a discipline and justice is possible (one day, if we work for it):
We Do This ‘Til We Free Us - Mariame Kaba
For the day you’d rather spend alternating back and forth between Bridgerton and HGTV. (Trust me.):
For the day you feel like being just a little bit spooked and convinced that every sound you hear might be a person hiding in the walls of your home:
The Wife Upstairs - Rachel Hawkins
For the day you consider shedding your life, running away to Vegas, and doing something totally out of character (and for the day after that, when you realize what you’ve done and have to find your way out of your existential crisis and need some mental health support):
For the day you think modern life is pretty bad, and need a perspective gut-check that things have always been worse, that we have survived things like the Great Depression & Dust Bowl era in no small part through collective action and organizing:
The Four Winds - Kristin Hannah
For the day you feel behind all your peers, or like you’re faking being an adult, or like you’re sick of adulthood, or like you’re not sure if your career/relationship/education/income is where it “should be” and need a reminder that “should” is a false premise:
But You’re Still So Young - Kayleen Schaefer
March is such a good month for books - my Kindle is stacked. Stay up to date here. If you got this forwarded to you, please sign up! I’m back and ready to read.
