I worked in a senior role on a long shot House campaign that went nowhere earlier this year and came away beyond frustrated with a lot of the consultants — good people who meant well! But the candidate’s main strength was deep, DEEP local relationships and knowledge, and you could see that they had no playbook to build on those. Instead, everything on the campaign got redirected to fundraising for ad buys that, truly, were “insert Democrat here” chasing headlines of the week. And having known the candidate for years, the most heartbreaking thing was watching how that pressure started to make him doubt his own expertise, his own self-presentation, and his fundamental worthiness to serve in that office in that district. He won’t run again, which means we’re losing someone who SHOULD have been absolutely a prime recruitment target.

Anyway thanks for giving me something to link when people ask me what went wrong there 😂

You are very right about it being a predominantly male space. I’m trying hard to bring more women into the political consulting space, it’s challenging but worth it! We are proudly supporting a Run for Something Candidate this cycle❤️
